What is Mental Health 1st Aid?

Mental Health 1st Aid is similar to traditional 1st Aid. However, rather than looking after someone’s physical health, it considers their mental health and wellbeing. A Mental Health 1st Aid Champion has received appropriate training to support someone that may be struggling with their mental health. Therefore, they are the person that an individual can approach to confide in. This person can guide the individual dealing with poor mental health to get the support they need. In addition, this person will also know how to spot the signs of poor mental health. As a result, they will be able to help someone address it before it escalates.

However, it is vital to remember that becoming a Mental Health 1st Aid Champion does not hold the same qualification as a therapist. In short, they are simply able to support an individual. Therefore, they can encourage individuals non judgementally and confidentially. Also, they can aid them to access the professional help they need. The Mental Health 1st Aid Champion should observe if someone’s situation is worsening. For example, if the individual has harmed themselves or feeling suicidal. In that case, they will need to asses the situation and involve the necessary professionals or emergency services.

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is what determines how we feel, think, and act, therefore significantly affecting our daily lives. Our mental health is equally important to our physical health. When a person has good mental health, they are more likely to lead a more resilient and happier life. For this reason, it is essential to learn ways to maintain and improve our mental health.

When a person does not have good mental health and wellbeing, they can experience increased anxiety, stress and depression. Most importantly, we can still share these feelings when we have good mental health also. However, those with good mental health tend to be more resilient to cope with these problems more effectively.

What Factors Can Impact Mental Health?

Everyone is at risk of developing a problem with their mental health at some point in their life. Our genetics can influence how likely we are to suffer poor mental health. Nonetheless, a variety of other factors impact our mental health. For example:

  • Financial trouble
  • Trauma
  • Bereavement
  • Long term stress
  • Unemployment
  • Drug and alcohol misuse
  • Loneliness
  • Having a long-term health condition

Why is it Important to Promote Good Mental Health?

Promoting good mental health is essential because poor mental health is a common issue which many people experience. Therefore, by talking about it more openly, we can tackle the stigma. As a result, people will be encouraged to be more open and seek help when they need it. These statistics show just how much of an issue poor mental health is:

  • 25% of adults at some stage during their lifetime have been diagnosed with a form of mental illness. (Source: Annual Health Survey)
  • An additional 15% have experienced less severe problems, which put them at risk of developing mental health problems in the future. (Centre for Mental Health)
  • 1 in 6 people in England has reported common mental health problems, such as anxiety or depression, in any given week. (Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Survey: Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing)
  • Half of all mental health lifetime cases begin by the age of 14. (National Institute for Mental Health)
