What is Mental Health 1st Aid?
Mental Health 1st Aid is similar to traditional 1st Aid. However, rather than looking after someone’s physical health, it considers their mental health and wellbeing. A Mental Health 1st Aid Champion has received appropriate training to support someone that may be struggling with their mental health. Therefore, they are the person that an individual can approach to confide in. This person can guide the individual dealing with poor mental health to get the support they need. In addition, this person will also know how to spot the signs of poor mental health. As a result, they will be able to help someone address it before it escalates.
However, it is vital to remember that becoming a Mental Health 1st Aid Champion does not hold the same qualification as a therapist. In short, they are simply able to support an individual. Therefore, they can encourage individuals non judgementally and confidentially. Also, they can aid them to access the professional help they need. The Mental Health 1st Aid Champion should observe if someone’s situation is worsening. For example, if the individual has harmed themselves or feeling suicidal. In that case, they will need to asses the situation and involve the necessary professionals or emergency services.
What is Mental Health?
Mental health is what determines how we feel, think, and act, therefore significantly affecting our daily lives. Our mental health is equally important to our physical health. When a person has good mental health, they are more likely to lead a more resilient and happier life. For this reason, it is essential to learn ways to maintain and improve our mental health.
When a person does not have good mental health and wellbeing, they can experience increased anxiety, stress and depression. Most importantly, we can still share these feelings when we have good mental health also. However, those with good mental health tend to be more resilient to cope with these problems more effectively.
