When Will Life Return to Normal?
After so long, most people want to know when will life return to normal. In short, it remains uncertain when life will return to normal. When the pandemic ends, everything won’t change back to how it was before. However, we are all keen to get back to enjoying our lives and being able to socialise once again. This will still be the case. Therefore, although the pandemic will mean things have likely changed for good, we must remember that it isn’t all negative. In other words, the question “when will life return to normal?” cannot be answered. Instead, we should consider “will we ever get back to normal?” and prepare for the idea of a new normal.
COVID-19 seemed to strike the world in the blink of an eye. However, getting over the pandemic isn’t so simple. The excellent news to answer the question “When will life return to normal?” is that vaccinations have already been provided to many people. In other words, we are one step further to overcome the pandemic. Therefore, even though the virus isn’t simply going to disappear, it looks like we will be able to live alongside the virus.
When Will Life Return to Normal for Businesses
Some of the industries which have suffered most in the past year have been hospitality, travel and high street retailers. They have been unable to operate in their usual way due to government guidelines. Restrictions have led to a rise in unemployment since the pandemic. Many people cannot question “when will life return to normal?” as they have lost their jobs. Unfortunately, many businesses will go bankrupt due to the pandemic and not open their doors again.
On the other hand, many companies have thrived. Online retailers are a crucial example. There has been a rise in people shopping online rather than in-store, as high-street stores could not open. Therefore, this has resulted in people becoming more aware of what shopping is available online. These companies do not question “when will life return to normal?” as the industry will continue to grow.
When Will Life Return to Normal in The Workplace
Employers have had to come up with an alternative to office working due to social distancing. As a result, there has been a considerable increase in the number of people working from home. Therefore, when will life return to normal for employees? Truthfully, it probably won’t for many. Working from home has brought about many positives for businesses. For example, being more time-efficient as staff get more work done. Staff training is easier as skills can be learned and developed online. Also, employees do not have to be local, with interviews being held online. Moreover, businesses can save money as they do not need office space for staff.
When Will Life Return to Normal for Employees?
Each person’s feelings about working from home vary greatly. However, it is surprising that many people believe that working from home has improved their mental health and wellbeing. Reasons for this are that staff no longer have to travel to work. Therefore, they can work anywhere, and there is greater flexibility. Also, they can customise their workspace in a way that will help them focus.
However, others argue that since working from home, their mental health and wellbeing have reduced. Many say that they are less connected to their workmates, meaning they have increased feelings of loneliness. Others find it hard to take time away from work as they work in their bedroom or on a sofa. As a result, people struggle to get a good night’s sleep, leading to high stress and anxiety levels. Without having to leave home for work, there has been the issue of individuals having less exercise than they usually would.
Will We Continue to Work from Home?
Therefore, when will life return to normal for employees? Will we ever get back to normal? Would we really want to go back to normal? The suggested hybrid approach, makes us believe things won’t go back to normal. The approach would suit many individuals, giving them the benefits of both ways of working. Accordingly, it will reduce stress levels, anxiety and depression. However, for some, the reality of “when will life return to normal?” is that their virtual working life is the new norm.
Mental Health and Wellbeing for Returning to Work
The thought of returning to work is daunting more many. We have become so accustomed to home working, so returning to work may bring negative emotions. Planning your return to work will enable you to avoid overwhelming feelings, reduce stress and anxiety, and promote good mental health and wellbeing. Developing good mental health and wellbeing can be done in a variety of ways.
Talk to Your Employer
Talk to your line manager about you’re feeling about returning to work. Perhaps ask your employer when will life return to normal for the business? Discuss with them the option of hybrid working, even if this is only available temporarily. Most importantly, mixed working will help you slowly adjust back into office life.
Keep in touch with colleagues. Work relationships may have suffered as we have been spending less time with each other. Therefore, try to develop and improve relationships before your return. Talk about things other than work. It would be best to avoid conversations like “when will life return to normal?” and “will we ever get back to normal?”. There is no point in worrying about these things for now. Instead, share with them the struggles you experienced through covid, such as grief, illness, or mental health problems. Also, offer support for any struggles they have faced since the pandemic. Therefore, you will be able to support each other upon your return to work.
Create a Schedule
By planning your time and responsibilities, you will have a visual guide you can stick to. Thus, you can prioritise tasks, set realistic goals, avoid taking on too many responsibilities and maintain an excellent work-life balance.
Prioritise Your Wellbeing
Ensure you make an effort to maintain good mental health and wellbeing. Don’t spend your time thinking, “when will life return to normal… will we ever get back to normal?”. Instead, be proactive and improve your wellbeing now, as, after all, there is no time like the present. There are lots of things that you can do, which can be built into your schedule, for example:
- Keep active
- Eat well
