Resilience is key to having good mental health and well-being. In other words, resilience is the ability to cope with the changes we go through in life. Mental health is just as important as physical health. Resilience is the best way we can maintain good mental health. Resilience can improve our well-being as we can deal with problems better. What are the Benefits of Resilience?

There are many benefits of resilience meaning that it is something we all should try to develop. However, we will all have problems in our lives. Even those with high resilience meaning that it simply helps you to deal with these problems more effectively. Having resilience is good to help us be more successful as we are more motivated. In other words, resilient people can set realistic goals and achieve them. Also, they can accept the changes that happen during their lives and prepare for them rather than worrying. As a result, they have a better outlook on life and are less likely to become overwhelmed with stress.

Can I Become Resilient?

Resilience is something we can be born with, meaning that some can cope easily with problems from a young age. However, this doesn't happen for all of us. Yet, resilience is something that can be learnt and developed through our lives. In other words, we can become more resilient through our social groups, environment, physical fitness etc.

How Can You Build Resilience?

Resilience is how we can bounce back from problems and face the challenges life has to throw at us head-on. For example, relationship problems, death of a loved one, issues with our health or even financial stress. Resilience is how we can gain better control over our life. We do not have the power to control outside circumstances. However, we have the power of our minds to change the way we think about them. We can adjust our mindset more easily when we have high resilience meaning we can maintain a positive attitude. Therefore, we can grow and develop whilst maintaining good mental health and well-being along the way. Some ways in which resilience is built are:

Avoid Negative Self Talk

People who often think negatively about themselves have low resilience meaning they will struggle more with problems. When we talk negatively to ourselves, it is often more harmful than it is helpful. Telling ourselves that we are bad at something brings us down. Therefore, we develop a negative attitude about ourselves. Consequently, we can lack the energy to better ourselves and step out of our comfort zone. Instead, we should positively talk to ourselves. Therefore, we can encourage ourselves to do well and succeed. Talking to ourselves positively helps us to reach our goals. Resilience is developed through positive self-talk as we can learn to better ourselves through our mistakes. In other words, when we do not have the outcome we had wished for, positive self-talk will allow us to appreciate what we gained from the experience.

Prioritise Your Relationships with Others

Resilience is more easily gained when you have a good connection with those close to you. When we have positive social relationships, we tend to cope better when faced with stress. In other words, when we have encountered a problem, it is helpful to have someone to talk to and help us to see the bigger picture. Therefore, the issues in which we first thought were significant may be minor in reality. These people will support you through your struggles and help you to build your resilience. We allow ourselves to accept help from others more when we have resilience meaning we can ask for support when we need it to overcome challenges more quickly.

Practise Self Care

Self-care is essential for everyone. In other words, resilience is gained when we give ourselves the attention we deserve. As a result, you will become a better version of yourself. In other words, you become more confident and have higher self-esteem. Practising self-care helps to relieve stress and increase our energy levels. Some examples of how to practise self-care are:

  • Take care of your body- exercise regularly and eat well to ensure you can maintain good physical health.
  • Visit the doctor when you feel there is something wrong with your physical health to solve the problem quickly.
  • Practise mindfulness as a way to help you remain present and avoid negative thoughts about the past or the future. Mindfulness meditation can also be good for living in the moment.
  • Practise gratitude to become more aware of what you have in your life and become more grateful.
  • Make time for the things you love, whether it be a hobby, meeting up with friends or even watching some TV.

Have a Positive Attitude Toward Change

It is not uncommon to dread changes in life, whether they are permanent or not. However, changes are opportunities for us to grow and develop. Therefore, try to change yourself when you are overthinking when things are out of the normal. Instead, live in the moment and accept change. You never know what can happen, and change could actually be very beneficial for you. Therefore, try to be positive and see the glass as half full. Don't think negatively, at least until something negative has happened.

In Summary

Resilience is not a way to avoid difficult times in our lives. Instead, it is learning to cope with and overcome them. In other words, resilience is being able to pick yourself back up again and move on from issues rather than spending time avoiding or overthinking them. As we become more resilient, we begin to accept that not everything will go to plan. In other words, we can forgive ourselves for making mistakes and focus on learning from them rather than letting them hold us back in the future. As a result, we are more likely to go outside of our comfort zone in the future as we are not afraid to make mistakes.
